EQUINOX MARATHON - If you don't know what this is, you need to Google it!
This BEAST is what Clayton chose to run as his very first Marathon (with only a month of training). Basically it's 9 miles of up and down a bunch of good hills (this is the "flat" part). From there it climbs 2000 feet in 4 miles (mile 13) and then goes up and down a bunch more hills until mile 17.5 when it drops straight down into H-E-double hockey sticks of jagged rocks and water rutted trail, 500 feet in .2 of a mile! This is what is known as the chute, which is very dangerous, and a medical team is waiting at the bottom (the only one on the coarse). After you are finished tumbling down the chute, it still is a continual downhill for the next 8 miles, almost to the end. Now, one would think that 8 miles downhill at the end of a marathon would be welcomed, but really this is why it is ranked as the 3rd hardest in the nation. When you are blistered and your knees are shot and your toes are continually being smashed into the front of your shoes, not to mention your physical/mental exhaustion, the end is still nowhere in sight.
Here is Clayton finishing his very last hill down toward the finish line.

Almost there....

He did it!!! 62nd place in the men's category. We are all SO proud of him! Now, almost a week later, he says he can't wait to do it again. He wants to try it with healthy knees and blow that 4 hour mark out of the water. I have no doubt that he will, let's face it, it's Clayton! I am curious to see how well he does in the Marathon in Anchorage in June next year. I will be doing that one too, but next to his time, I probably won't be posting mine....can you blame me?
